Thanks a million! The Mystery Dinner was a grand success!

The WCA’s Red Barn was jumping on Friday night, April 5. Happily, the ice and snow held off for a few days so everyone could come out for a night of mystery, mayhem and delicious food. The sold-out event incorporated a festive fund-raising dinner with a fun mystery game.

The WCA is indebted to the many volunteers who gave their time and talents to make this wonderful evening happen. Heaps of applause go out to event chairperson, Amber Gove. The evening was her brainchild. Amber says, “A huge thank you to everyone involved. I could never have done it alone!”

Rachel Seamans led the behind-the-scenes, set-up and kitchen crews. The workers included a great group of hardworking students. We were delighted to have Sophie Anderson, Max and Hayden Brown and Rose Patrick in the kitchen and on the floor. The foursome did a fabulous job serving, busing tables and cleaning up.

Joanne Tulonen along with Amber and Rachel created a fun-filled supper club, complete with disco ball. A delicious Italian dinner was prepared by Susan Nye and Ann Davis. Some of Wilmot’s best cooks and bakers donated garlic bread, cupcakes or a vegetarian option for dinner. Many thanks to Darlene Delano, Mary Fanelli, Chris Jenssen, Kristin McCarthy, Michelle Robinson, Jesse Schust,  Helen,and  Barbara Wiggin. Additional thanks to Marc Davis for dashing out for more chicken for the sold-out audience and ticket-taker Adam Glass for manning the door.

Laugh-filled mayhem was the order of the evening after a “murder” was discovered at the Drop Dead Disco. A talented troop of local actors kept the suspense high and the questions coming. Thank you to all of the players – Kendall Buck, Jeff Gill, Jesse Schust, Joanne Tulonen, Helen Wickham and Barbara Wiggin.

Meet the Wilmot Candidates – February 21

WCA hosts candidates’ night.

Would you like to learn more about your neighbors who are running for town office in Wilmot’s March 12 election? If yes, then plan to attend a candidates’ night hosted by the WCA from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at the Red Barn, 64 Village Road.

You’ll have an opportunity to meet the people who are seeking elected office in an informal setting and learn why they want to serve the town. Candidate who have agreed to attend include: Chris Wells, three-year term, selectman; Mary Kay Huntoon, two-year term, town clerk/tax collector; Chris Jenssen, three-year term, cemetery trustee; Jan Baker, one-year term, trustee of the trust funds; Bill Doody, three-year term, trustee of the trust funds; Judy Hauck, two-year term, library trustee; and Barbara Wiggin, three-year term, library trustee.

Light refreshments will be served.

A big thank you to WCA volunteers for a delicious success

The WCA’s Red Barn was packed with smiles on February 1. A great crowd joined us on a bitter cold night to enjoy the WCA’s inaugural Mac & Cheese Supper. People came from far and wide to help the WCA launch this new fundraiser and soon-to-be favorite winter tradition. Organizers Amber Gove and Rachel Seamans would like to thank everyone who attended the fundraiser as well as the many volunteers who made it possible.

Some of the region’s best cooks prepared delicious Mac & Cheese to delight every taste bud plus salads and beautiful desserts. These fine chefs and bakers included Shandi Allen, Denise Curtiss, Ann Davis, Darlene Delano, Mary Fanelli, Rachel De Thomas, Margaret Doody, Amber Gove, Chris Jenssen, Ginny Lasonde, Donna Miller, Margaret Monto, Kristen McCarthy, Lori Meding, Rachel Seamans, De Segerson, Kimberly Slover, Brooke Smith, Christine Stewart, Susan Ware and Barbara Wiggin.

Amber and Rachel were ably assisted by a superb group of kitchen and dining room volunteers. The WCA welcomes student volunteers and were happy to have Sophie Anderson, Max Brown, Rose Harper and Ethan Thompson on the crew. Ann and Marc Davis and Susan Nye were also on hand to help.

The WCA is grateful to everyone who helped at and supported the Mac & Cheese Supper.

Fall into Art

The WCA is delighted to announce Fall into Art. Featuring a wonderful mix of local artists, this art exhibit and sale will take place November 9 and 10 at the WCA’s Red Barn, 64 Village Road in Wilmot.

The show will include the works of Byron Carr, Penny Koburger, David Tibbetts, Sue Finney, Grace Schust and her daughter Lindsey, Rosemary McGuirk and Marc Beerman and his son Jared and Leslie Ward.

The art exhibit and sale will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 9. Wine and cheeses will be served and a $15 donation per person is suggested. During the reception artists will be on hand to discuss their work and techniques and answer questions. They will be back on Saturday, November 10 from 9 a.m. to noon.

“We are pleased to host a show that features so many of our very talented local artists,” said Chris Jenssen, co-chair of Fall into Art. Co-chair Penny Koburger added, “There is a great mix of art. The works include many beautiful watercolors, oil paintings, collage and photographs.”

This fundraiser benefits the WCA. Throughout the year, the WCA offers many free social, recreational, and educational programs and activities. In addition, it owns and operates the Red Barn, a community center on Village Road, and Timothy Patten Park, a beach and playground on Tannery Pond in Wilmot. Both facilities are available for rent.

We love scarecrows!

The Wilmot population got a bit of a bump in October. Scarecrows began to appear on front lawns and porches throughout the town. The WCA and Wilmot Garden Club once again delighted to host their annual Scarecrow Contest.

Tom Jenssen didn’t have to wait long for something to happen with his Fishing for Snow entry. (A wet icy snow fell a few days after the judging. Snow on October 27 is hardly a record but good news for skiers.) Tom won the Sportiest Award.

Most Creative went to Man Treed by a Bear from Keith Seamans. Word has it that traffic on Campground Road has increased significantly since Keith’s creation went up.

A Palooza of a Day – Thank you to all the volunteers, community partners and sponsors!

Adam Glass presented the WCA board with a fabulous idea last winter. Why not have an all-day event celebrating all things Wilmot? … a Wilmotpalooza! Ann Davis and Donna Miller, joined his committee and work began. The first Wilmotpalooza was held Sunday, September 30. Starting with a breakfast at 8 a.m. the day continued with a Wilmot Volunteer Fire Department demonstration, games for kids and face painting on the Green, the Moores on the Bandstand at noon and Puppypalooza.

We couldn’t have done it without our fabulous volunteers, community partners and sponsors.

Rachel Seamans and Amber Gove started the morning with a delicious pancakepalooza. They were ably assisted by  Rhonda Gauthier, Chris Jennssen,  Janet and  Jonathon Schwarz, De Segerson and Barbara Wiggin. We love our student volunteers! Kearsarge students Max Brown, Carly Esposito, Rose Patrick and Calley Valerie joined the kitchen crew. Finally, Deb Beerman,  Lisah Carpenter,   Rhonda Gauthier,  Donna Miller, Susan Nye and Jan Sahler shared their talents and tasty baked goods.

Over at the Ball Field, the Wilmot Volunteer Fire Department staged an extraction. The WVFD was out in full force with trucks, hoses, saws and the Jaws of Life.

Back on the Wilmot Town Green, Bill Burris set up his fabulous games. Wilmot kids never tire of these wonderful, old fashioned wooden games. Enthusiasm was high. Jeff Gill and Tom Schamberg  helped with set up and breakdown the games.

Ann and Marc Davis ran the field games.  Melissa Aubertin and Billie-Jean Hufault pitched in and all ran smoothly – without a single tear! The sack race was a real highligh – thanks to Dr. Beth Palmer at the Kearsarge Veterinary Clinic for donating the feed bags. Meanwhile, Kathy Neuberger tirelessly painted tiny face after tiny face with butterflies, Super Mario and more.

Kenny Clarke brought a giant loader down to the Green so the young and young at heart could touch-a-truck. Elkins Fish and Game Club and the Wilmot Conservation Commission were on hand to introduce themselves and share the work they do. In case you didn’t get enough pancakes, Ben’s Bad Dogs and Nana’s Kitchen sold lunch on the Green.

There was also a vote on … How to Pronounce Wilmot … and the winner is Will-MOT. A close second and runner up was Will-MIT.

After finishing clean-up after the breakfast, Rachel Seamans and Max Brown rushed over to the Town Green in time for The Moores Concert. They popped free popcorn for everyone. Max’s mom Katherine joined in the popping. Emma and Jordan Zuger were here, there and everywhere passing out schedules.

The afternoon ended with Puppypalooza on the Ball Field. Dee Ganely talked about Bite Safety for Kids and her dogs demonstrated their agility. New England K9 Search and Rescue did a demo. Caring Animal Partners gave a presentation about pet therapy and service dogs. Puppypalooza ended with a fun disc dog demo with Jess Davis, Harper Davis and Laura Campbell and their Frisbee catching dogs.

Magical Construction at Timmy Patten Park

Timmy Patten Park was a major construction zone on July 12 when a crew of more than 50 kids came out to build houses for their favorite fairies and gnomes.

The fun began around 5:30 p.m. Mary Kulacz of Wilmot put together and ran the program along with Wilmot librarian, Michelle Travis. Both were delighted with the enthusiastic turnout. Mary said, “The weather was perfect and it was great fun. The children were very creative.” Michelle agreed, adding, “We all had a wonderful time. Thank you to all the families that joined in.” Many families stayed to enjoy the playground and picnic as well as kyak and swim in Tannery Pond.

The newly refurbished slide was a definite favorite!

The event was co-sponsored by the Wilmot Community Association (WCA) and the Wilmot Public Library (WPL). It was free to one and all. Construction materials were provided.

Fun with Fairies & Gnomes

Looking for something to do with your kids or grandkids? Come to the beach at Timmy Patten Park in Wilmot on Thursday, July 12 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Children are invited to build houses for their favorite fairies or gnomes. The program is free and open to all.

Fun with Fairies & Gnomes is co-sponsored by the WCA and the Wilmot Public Library (WPL). “We joined forces to begin this new tradition last year. It was great fun. The houses were amazing,” says Mary Kulacz, co-chair, from Wilmot. She adds, “Construction materials will be provided and children are encouraged to bring their wings and magic wands. Families are welcome to bring bathing suits and picnics and enjoy the beach before and after construction.”

The WPL kicks off The Library Rocks Summer Reading Program on July 5. Michelle Travis, library director, says, “We’ll be getting in the mood for fairy and gnome houses with a fairy story at 6:15 p.m. on July 5. In addition, children are encouraged to bring rocks to paint for their houses. Children can bring more than one rock but they shouldn’t be larger than an adult fist.

Timmy Patten Park is located on Shindagan Road on Tannery Pond. Along with the beach, there is a playground, picnic tables and a grill.

Another great Black Fly Blitz 5K

Thanks to the work of nearly 40 volunteers, the WCA’s 14th annual Black Fly Blitz on Memorial Day – Monday, May 28 – was a resounding success. Proceeds from the Black Fly Blitz support the WCA’s programs and facilities. The track and cross-country teams at Kearsarge Regional High School (KRHS) receive a portion of the race proceeds.

Several KRHS students, all members of the  track and cross-country teams, assisted with the race. They included: Marliese Baer, Jenna Bears, Ben Boulton, Hunter Burns, Mya Dube, Trevor Pauling and Evan Pauling. KRHS coaches, staff and parents assisting with the event included Peter Angus, Ernie Brake, Brian Pauling and Ed Rehor.

Runners and walkers were ably assisted by Wilmot’s finest. David Zuger, Wilmot police chief, led the more 170 runners on course in a police cruiser. Wilmot police officer Russ Lamson helped coordinate safety for participants as well as spectators.

Members of the Wilmot Volunteer Fire Department’s FAST Squad including Ethan Ballin, Sean Brunel, Scott Carpenter, Tom Jenssen, Jonathan Jusczyk and Darren Phipps were on hand to assist with any medical emergencies. The Wilmot Ladies Aid Society loaned their tables. The Wilmot Highway Department provided road barricades to ensure participants’ safety at intersections along the course.

Nikki Arsenault, Janet Baker, Lisah Carpenter, Ann Davis, Chris Jenssen, Donna Miller, Jan Sahler, Rachel Seamans and De Segerson baked cookies and provided additional  food for race participants.

Bill Burris set up his wonderful handmade games. He was ably assisted by Bill Doody. Margaret Doody applied temporary tattoos – in a black fly motif – to the delight  of children and adults.

Other volunteers included: Jenny Santora, Molly Santora, Will Santora, Jim Santora, Keith Seamans and Adam Glass. Marc Davis assisted with sponsor recruitment. Susan Nye photographed the event.
