Reunion Revenge – Dinner and a Show in Wilmot!

Roast Pork will be on the menu along with murder, mystery and mayhem. The fun starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 23 at the Wilmot Community Association’s Red Barn at 64 Village Road in Wilmot. You will enjoy a delicious roast pork dinner (with vegetarian option) while murders, old and new, unfold and unravel.

The plot thickens! Graduates of Mountain View High School Class of 1957 are gathering for their 20th reunion. Only, it turns out to be a Reunion Revenge! Can you figure out who killed Molly Gray? And, gasp, is the murderer lying in wait at the class reunion? Partygoers will play detective in this interactive mystery game. While clues may abound, they may also contradict.

“Murder Mystery Parties are a lot of fun,” says Amber Gove, chairperson for the gala event. She adds, “These parties provide a unique experience for participants as well as a great fundraising opportunity for not-for-profit organizations like the WCA.” The longtime WCA board member warns, “Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out.” If you would like tickets to this fundraiser or to volunteer, contact Amber Gove at 748-1684 or email the WCA. The cost of the dinner and show is $20 per person and the party is BYOB. 

Everyone is encouraged to come in costume. The theme of the night is “Come as You Were.” Get in the spirit of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe and think fabulous fifties. Dust off the poodle skirt, find the cat-eye glasses, and get out your leather jacket. Prizes will be awarded!

WCA Annual Meeting and special presentation for dog lovers

Join the WCA Board of Directors for an action-packed Annual Meeting. The meeting will take place  at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 20 at the WCA’s  Red Barn at 64 Village Road in Wilmot. All are welcome and WCA members are encouraged to attend. Meet with friends and neighbors, cheer 2017 successes and learn about plans for 2018.

Make sure you stick around for refreshments and a great presentation on New Hampshire’s state dog by Bob Cottrell.

Yes, if you didn’t realize it, New Hampshire has a state dog. It’s the chinook. Thanks to a grant from the NH Humanities Council, Bob Cottrell will present On the Trail of New Hampshire’s State Dog at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 20.

Bob is a historian and museum consultant as well as a speaker with the New Hampshire Humanities Council. He will talk about these beautiful and hardworking animals at the Red Barn. Feel free to come early to learn about the WCA’s plans for 2018 and enjoy the refreshments.

Both the meeting and presentation are free and open to all.

Raising our voices in song

The WCA Red Barn was filled with music and song on December 21. A cheerful group of holiday makers gathered for coffee, cookies and carols. Many thanks to Fred Ogmundson for playing the piano and leading the songfest. Kudos as well to Mary Jane Ogmundson for her stirring reading of Clement Moore’s poem, The Night Before Christmas.

The Red Barn was looking lovely with Christmas decorations and festive flower arrangements. Many thanks to the anonymous donor who purchased the arrangements from Forest Cone & Evergreen Shop. Event helpers included Marion Allen, Tootie Fleury, Chris Jenssen, John Monto, Loretta Rayno, Tom Schamberg, Rachel Seamans, Kimberly Slover and Barbara Wiggin.

The sweet treats were wonderful and thanks go out to bakers Jan Baker, Rhonda Gauthier, Chris Jenssen, and Jean Wallace.

And finally, a big thank you to Ann Davis for organizing the event and pulling it all together.

A musical morning at the WCA

The WCA invites one and all to Coffee & Carols. The free concert and sing-along will take place on Thursday, December 21 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Red Barn.

Popular carols are on the playlist and everyone is encouraged to sing along. Song sheets will be provided. “The WCA is delighted to host this holiday event,” said Ann Davis, WCA board member and event coordinator. “When we heard that the regular monthly senior lunch would not be held in December, we had to step in.”

A reservation is not needed. Just drop by for a little holiday music with friends, a cup of coffee and a sweet treat. Fred Ögmundson has generously volunteered to man the piano keys for the sing-along.

Buster Keaton at the WCA

There was a special screening of two classic Buster Keaton comedies at the WCA’s Red Barn on Saturday, November 18. Thanks to Jeff Rapsis, the films were presented as they were meant to be shown – on a large screen with live music. First up was the short film ‘Sherlock Jr. (1924) followed by Keaton’s comic Civil War masterpiece ‘The General’ (1926).

He never smiled on camera, earning him the nickname of the Great Stone Face but Buster Keaton’s comedies rocked Hollywood’s silent era with laughter. Acclaimed for their originality and timeless visual humor, Keaton’s films remain popular crowd-pleasers today.

Jeff Rapsis is a composer and performer who specializes in creating live musical scores for silent film screenings. WCA president, Nancy Large who heads up the 2017 concert series says, “We wanted something a little different for the final concert of the season. We are delighted that Jeff can join us on November 18.”

A fan of silent films since middle-school, Rapsis brings Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Buster Keaton and other great actors from the past to life. He does not use sheet music during the performance. Instead, the New Hampshire native carries a notebook of ideas and improvises throughout the film. Rapsis’ approach ensures that each performance is new, fresh and different.

Like most WCA events and programs, the screening and concert were free and open to the public. A special thanks goes out to volunteers Darlene Delano, Jessica Ferren, Nancy Large, Susan Nye, Rachel Seamans and Roxanne Shed.

Volunteers ensure WCA craft fair’s success

More than 30 volunteers ensured that the WCA’s annual Holiday Craft Fair held Saturday, Dec. 2 was a terrific success. Without volunteers’ able assistance, it would be impossible to organize and present this event.

We extend special thanks to Kathy Neuberger, chairperson of the craft fair, for her tireless work and to Rachel Seamans for organizing and staffing Rachel’s Café.

Gail Parenteau and the staff at Andover Elementary-Middle School were helpful and accommodating prior to and during the craft fair.

Happy Halloween at the Red Barn

It was a dark and stormy night … but spirits were flying high at the WCA Red Barn. From Little Bo Peep and her wonderful sheep to ghouls, ghosts and princesses, it was a fun and colorful evening.

Our first attempt at Trunk or Treat was a wash out but we still had fun. Our Trunk or Treat volunteers abandoned their cars in the parking lot and joined us inside. Having them added to the fun … and the loot the kids carried away.

R.P. Hale in Concert

A small but enthusiastic group gathered at the WCA Red Barn on Saturday evening, September 16 for a harpsicord and hammered dulcimer concert. Dressed in period costume, R.P. Hale was the man behind the keys and mallets. Along with playing pieces by Sir William Herschel, Thomas Jefferson, and more, R.P. took a few minutes before each piece to discuss the piece as well as his instruments.  

A multi-generational and interdisciplinary artist-craftsman, R.P. has been teaching a variety of topics and skills since 1976.He is a concert harpsichordist and hammer dulcimer player as well as a harpsichord/dulcimer maker, master calligrapher and illustrator, pen-and-ink artist, nationally-known wood-engraver, Intaglio and Letterpress printer, wood carver, maker of marbleized papers and fabrics, period re-enactor, linguist, solar and archaeo-astronomer, and historian.

In 1999, the Smithsonian Institute recognized R.P. as one of the top musical instrument makers in the U.S. and exhibited his work. His concerts reflect his wide-ranging musical interests from c.750 B.C. works from China to that of Sir William Herschel of the 1790s.

Born to a Sonoran Mexican family of artists and printers, his programs “La História Cultural de México,” “El Calendro Azteca,” and “Astronomy, Math. Calendars, and Histories of the Maya,” respectively feature the history of Mexico as seen through the arts and traditional lore. R.P. received a Fellowship from the State Arts Council and in 2000 was invited to present his multi-faceted traditions at the Celebrate New Hampshire festival.

Along with his solo performances, he is in heavy demand by ensembles for his improvised accompaniment skills at the harpsichord and organ.

R.P. teaches at St. Paul’s School and is Senior Educator at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, specializing in spectroscopy, star evolution, mathematics, physics, astronomy history and archaeoastronomy. He has built a spectroscopy/optics teaching lab there. He taught summers at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia for 33 years and is a visiting faculty in art and astronomy at Davis and Elkins College.

A delicious breakfast was enjoyed by all

Close to 100 people enjoyed a delicious morning at the WCA’s Say Goodbye to Summer Breakfast on August 27. People came from far and wide to help the WCA celebrate the end of a great summer. Organizer and head chef, Darlene Delano outdid herself. The hearty breakfast was delicious and there was plenty of variety. A great time was had by all.

Darlene would like to thank her fabulous volunteers. First, the shoppers, bakers and cooks – Tammy Meldrim, Julia Nile, Conner Morrison, Kayla Largo and Denise Curtiss put together a fabulous breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, baked goods, the list goes on and on. Servers Rachel Seamans and De Segerson greeted all with a smile. The kitchen crew included Denise Curtiss, Darlene’s niece Jennifer Gove Barton and great nephew Cody Barton. Adam Glass was on hand before, during and after to help with set up, check-in, kitchen crew  and clean up. Nancy Large joined the cleanup crew.Thanks to all for making the breakfast possible.

In addition, kudos go out to our very special breakfast sponsors and donors. Lovely flowers added sunny cheer to the room, thanks to a donation from Forest Cone and Evergreen Shop. The maple syrup in Darlene’s baked french toast was donated by 4-A Sugar Shack. Labsphere provided generous support.

And finally, a big thank you to everyone who attended this delicious fundraiser!
